In regard to the specific concern, no special education students were discriminated against or left out of the high school experience of being included in a yearbook. All students involved in this program have already been included in high school yearbooks from their 9-12th grade years. The 18-22 transition program is a post high school, transition program for special education students who qualify for the program.
We regret that any of our students and their parents feel left out by not being included in the Blue Peak High School year book. Our Community Learning Center (CLC) houses many programs such as Adult Education, Blue Peak High School, and numerous CTE programs. Another program housed in the CLC is the 18-22 transition program. We are very proud of our 18-22 transition program in Tooele County School District. The program began 4 years ago as a pilot program and launched full scale, district wide 2 years ago. This program was designed to help our students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) who are not able to gain a traditional high school diploma within the standard window of 9-12th grade education. In this program, we give students job experiences and employment skills in addition to assisting them in their quest to earn their high school diploma. Students who are eligible for this program have already spent their 4 years in traditional high school and have had the opportunity to receive a certificate of completion from that high school. Once they transition in to the 18-22 transition program, these students are treated as post high school students. In fact, many of them are gainfully employed as a result of this program. In addition to that, one past student from this program was accepted to and is currently attending Utah State University.
Blue Peak High School is another program at our Community Learning Center. Blue Peak is our alternative high school for students who have not found success in the traditional high school setting and are still in the 10-12th grade. Students in this school enjoy smaller class sizes as well as opportunities to earn makeup credits towards graduation.
Most students who attend our Community Learning Center are associated with another high school within our district. Those students are included in their home high school yearbook. Students participating in programs such as Adult Education, Tooele Applied Technical College Cosmetology Program, and the 18-22 transition program are not associated with any specific high school and do not have year books. We value all of our students and are always looking for ways to improve. It was never our intent to make anyone feel left out. In an effort to make all students feel included, we have ordered an insert, free of charge, for any student who has purchased a yearbook from Blue Peak High School. This insert will include our students in the 18-22 transition program.
