MID-YEAR REPORT 2011-12 AND TRUST
LANDS INFORMATION --
We have had several SCC events so far this past
year. We had our fall meeting in October
and the SCC also sponsored a WHS Family Night at the local Catholic Church
which was well attended.
We
will have another official SCC meeting on 2/2/12. At that meeting we will address some of the
concerns which were brought to the forefront in our recent Title I audit. Namely, we will be revisiting our School/
Parent Compact and we will also be adopting a new Parent Involvement Policy.
Also
the Tooele County School District is sponsoring a related SCC activity this
coming Monday. It is called “What
Counts” and a light dinner will be served at the Anna Smith Elementary
School. Approximately 30 parents as well
as some community partners have been invited to attend this event which will
highlight the continuing improvements being made in our local schools.
We
will also have yet another parent night, sponsored by the WHS SCC on March
20. Tentatively, it has been scheduled
at the Catholic Church. Judge Alba will
be there to talk to members of our Hispanic community and to high school
students in particular.
Regarding
our Trust Lands funds -- we kept reading, math, and science as the
three academic areas that we will continue to emphasize. Purchases will be made with those needs in
mind. So far we have spent $1830 of our
Trust Lands funds on library books targeted for classroom use. Our school Trust Lands plan can easily be
found at this website: http://www.schoollandtrust.org/schools/
Our
school improvement efforts continue.
Teachers are still working with Life Long Learning (school improvement
consultants) to improve instruction and raise student achievement. The Read 180 Program (paid for via Title I
funds) is helping our 7th and 8th grade students to
improve their reading skills. Generally
speaking, the culture of the school has changed considerably. We are having more students on the honor roll
and fewer tardies, absences, etc. We
have a ways to go, but we are definitely headed in a positive direction.
